I really don't have a problem with what have been traditionally unisex names, like Jamie/Jaime. I don't like the new trend of taking a very masculine name and giving it to a girl, like Maxwell or James. I know most people aren't thinking gender politics when naming their children, but it reinforces this idea that what is masculine is "good" and what is feminine is "bad." I wouldn't feel this way if people were also giving very traditionally feminine names to boys, but they aren't.

I also went to school with a Ryanne, pronounced Ryan. I think having the "anne" in there feminized the name a bit so there was no confusion. But, this was high school. I have no idea what it was like for her in grade school/junior high.

I have no strong feelings one way or another on unisex names. I like some of them and not others. I just recently learned that Jude is a unisex name. I always thought it was a boy's name (thank you Beatles) and until recently I never knew any girls named that. My boss is named Shanon. He said he never had any problems when he was growing up but now he has a lot of people assume he is a girl.
I do think people need to think about the fact that their child is going to have to live with the unusual name. Seriously that unique spelling, made up word, pulled out of ancient books name can cause a lot of problems as kids are growing up.
