Good luck LMC. The HSG is probably the only test I haven't had (for a bunch of random reasons) but what you describe is exactly what my doc explained. Apparently the pain is crampy but over fairly quickly. I'm glad you got in quickly. Have they done a saline ultrasound (with the balloon and dildocam)? I'm sorry if you've had it and I missed your post. That can tell a lot too.

It's really not! It was pretty cool and didn't hurt at all. They insert a balloon and fill it with warm water then do the ultrasound of the uterus. At some point I'll post a pic of the dildocam because it's pretty funny. As you go through all of this it's amazing how calm you'll get and what you learn. Most of the doctors and nurses are really nice and understanding. No reason to be nervous!

Giaspo - thank you for sharing. That still sounds like it hurts.

I think I've said it before - but make sure you take ibuprofen ahead of time. (And if you have any anti anxiety meds, take one of those too)
The test isn't painful...but it's uncomfortable and takes a few minutes.
Oh...and don't wear good underwear and take a panty liner with you. (Potential "leaking". I know TMI but best to know)
You'll know right then and there is there are any issues (either the dye goes through the tubes or it doesn't) so thats a good thing.
Plus (and I think I said this before too) there is an increase in fertility for about 2-3 cycles after the test because everything IS clear after.
(The reason for no sex is that they don't want to potentially disrupt a fertilized egg with the test so they ask you to abstain to make sure it isn't a possibility)
I took the rest of the day off...just because I wasn't sure what to expect and we got take out and chilled on the couch. You'll feel a little weird and perhaps cramps that day, but that's really all there is to it. It is sort of neat to see your tubes and uterus on the screen with the dye going through them though.

Nothing I've gone through has been "painful" in any way. From HSG to the histo-sonogram to IUI to IVF. And all the doctors have been pretty awesome - and most of the nurses I've encountered working in fertility clinics/offices have been former fertility patients. They all get the anxiety and stress and have been really good at answering questions for us. It's funny...at this point, transvaginal ultrasounds are nothing to me and I find myself completely comfortable sitting half naked with just a plastic sheet draped over me and discussing things with nurses or doctors. I got over the initial "modesty" fears and realized that these people have seen it ALL and don't care about the fact that I am half naked - they are paying attention to ultrasound images, etc. I'm probably going to cry when I leave my RE here in the coming weeks and "graduate" to a regular OB. I've seen the people there practically weekly (if not more) for the past 4+ months - and they've literally held my hand during procedures and held their breath and crossed their fingers with me. If you don't feel comfortable with the people at your doctor - my BEST piece of advice is to shop around and find a different one. This is my 3rd RE and from day1 with them it has been an awesome experience.

I can sympathize, we're in the screening stages for IVF as well. I am getting the saline test (Saline Infusion Sonogram) done in July or August, once we're past our wedding and honeymoon. They skipped the HSG because we already know my tubes are what's causing my problems. I am not looking forward to the SIS. A uterus full of saline solution sounds terrible.

DH and I have talked about the treatments, but we plan to be one and done. I know a lot of the treatments (that I know of, please feel free to correct me) can increase the chances of multiples. Twins would be doable, but any more than that and I would need a go on TLC or Lifetime. Sorry I am a Debbie downer! This completely depends. IUI and clomid (clomid tending to be "step 1" of treatments) actually have the highest risk of multiples - IVF and more advanced ART you can be much more careful and selective. Yes, this - I believe clomid can cause you to release more eggs, hence increasing the likelihood of fraternal twins if multiple eggs are fertilized. IVF has gotten pretty advanced in recent years, to the point where in most cases, they can insert one embryo at a time with decent success (at least in youngish, healthy women). Back 10 years ago, doctors would take a shotgun approach, and put a few embryos in at once expecting most of them not to stick.

Thanks! At least in my situation, I have known for 10 years that I would have trouble getting pregnant (pelvic infection with unknown cause fucked my tubes). So my fiance and I were able to hit the ground running once we were ready to start the process. We are almost through all the screening (we are actually meeting with a genetic counselor today)... We still need to do the saline infusion sonogram, but since we're getting married in 23 days, we're putting the breaks on until July. Hopefully we can start our first IVF cycle by October.
