Not weird at all. Many people choose to do it ahead of time so they can avoid conceiving a child with CF in the first place. Mine wasn't a blood test though... it was a mouthwash DNA test. Good point. Interesting. I just assumed it was a blood test. Preconception is the BEST time to do carrier screening! I was planning on doing it that way myself but there was such a long wait time to see the GYN for a preconception visit that I got knocked up before I made it to the appointment I had scheduled. But if you think about it, it's better to know if you're a carrier before you're pregnant because then you have time to have your partner tested without the stress of worrying if you are carrying an affected baby while you wait those 2 weeks for his test result to come back... Personally, I think carrier testing should be offered as a routine part of GYN care to all woman of childbearing age. And most labs do require a blood draw for carrier testing.

Speaking of carrier testing, our RE recommended me possibly doing the advanced Ashkenazi Jewish screen (which I can't even fucking SPELL) because my grandfather was Jewish and his parents immigrated from Russia (now Latvia). But I can't get the fucking insurance company to give me a straight answer as to whether or not it's covered and they said it could be in the thousands of dollars. I think I'm very low risk, but I'll have to ask him about that today and see what he thinks. It wasn't marked down as a MUST DO prior to IVF like the CF screen, but I still want to check. I can put on my geneticist hat here. The Ashkenazi Jewish panel would probably be pretty low yield if you're only 1/4 that ancestry. Unless your husband is Jewish - then personally I'd consider doing it. CF screening is pretty routine and has been for a while, as it's the most common genetic condition. Carrier frequency for CF for someone with European ancestry is around 1 in 25. The other carrier screening that may be worthwhile asking about is SMA (spinal muscular atrophy), which has a carrier frequency of about 1 in 40. These are both autosomal recessive diseases so you are only at risk of having an affected child if both you and your partner are carriers. Also Fragile X syndrome screening is worth considering. It has a lower carrier frequency (about 1 in 200-300) but unlike CF and SMA this is a dominant condition, so it doesn't matter if your husband is a carrier or not. The genetics for Fragile X are complicated but the bottom line is that if you're a carrier then your chance of having an affected child is pretty high. Being a Fragile X carrier can also have other health implications (notably it's linked with premature menopause). I did screening for all 3 (CF, SMA, and Fragile X). A lot of practices routinely offer these three but some will only do CF and the Ashkenazi panel if appropriate. The SMA and Fragile X screenings are newer on the market.

LMC Don't worry about the saline U/S. It's different from the HSG test; this one looks at the uterus. When I had it done it took all of about 10 minutes. They expand the uterus with saline which feels very interesting but wasn't painful, and take a bunch of pictures. I wound up with a few uterine polyps which were removed (that wasn't bad either but does require general anesthesia). I think they advised ibuprofen afterwards. At that point it sounds like you'll have all of the info you need to be on your way! Is any of this covered by your insurance? Make sure they walk you through all of the financials. I think you mentioned going right to IVF; some plans require a few IUI attempts (to prove you need IVF) in order to cover the IVF. Your insurance company should have a fertility specialist who can help.

LMC - why do you have to fast for the hiv test? I never heard of this before. On a plus side maybe you will not have as many blood test the first trimester. You only need a full bladder for the first trimester ultrasounds. I actually was told that they dont need a full one for the 2nd and 3rd trimster ultrasounds. And to fully empty my bladder during one to see if the baby would move to the right position.

Last ultrasound my bladder got really full. They let me release a cup full and then go back. It was torture. I have to go on Tuesday for one, and start drinking a liter of water starting at 6:30am. I'm going to be peeing frequently all day afterwards, I can tell. I am surprised you still need a bladder that is full. Mine doesn't care anymore if its full or empty. I am a weirdo that can usually go 8+ hours while pregnant and not pee. Sometimes it is like eating to me and I just forget.

Once I was pregnant, I never needed a full bladder for an ultrasound. I had HG so there was no way a full bladder would've been possible. In fact, I was seriously dehydrated for a couple of my ultrasounds and they never had a problem seeing what they needed. I think they overestimate the amount of water they need you to drink.

snippet17 and LMC When I went through it, H and I had to do the HIV test. I have no idea why; it was a part of the litany of tests. I only went once for bloodwork and they took vial after vial of blood. The woman was like, don't fall over when you stand up. I've got super low blood pressure and they made me drink a bottle of water before I left. Thinking back, I should've had the U/S right after that, lol!

I never had a full bladder ultrasound either! They never even told me to drink any water beforehand. I definitely agree about the overestimating! I'm glad it wasn't just me! I was starting to think my healthcare providers were just weird or something.

Giaspo - I remember getting the hiv and stds test too and the tons of blood they took for my first round of blood tests after getting pregnant. Edit: I am surprised I have to take the syphiliss (sp?) now and not with the other std blood tests.

Yeah, I think the HIV test is standard pretty much everywhere. I had to do it with each pregnancy. I drank too much water for the us tech with DS, so I had to release some. I learned my lesson with DD, and I didn't drink a lot.

haha willpower has nothing to do with it, I just can't justify spending needlessly on endless pregnancy tests. TOM still hasn't made an appearance, so I'm like 90% sure i'm KU at this point, would just be looking for the test to confirm next weekend I need to send you a pregnancy test STAT. I have a ton of leftover ones that I'm not using (like 10 Wondfos and 2 FRERs). I'm dying of curiosity on your behalf! Who else wants to join me in a "POAS" chant?

Who else wants to join me in a "POAS" chant? Haha, it's less than a week guys! I promise I will let everyone know the results as soon as I know The frugal part of me is required to wait till Saturday to go to the store because I have a discount that I can use to get 15% off the damn tests lol. I'm just dying to welcome you to the Expecting board! It's time for my tenure as the most junior member (gestational age-wise, certainly not my chronological age!) of that board to come to an end. I do think you can buy cheapies at the Dollar store too, by the way No need for one of those fancy $10 a-piece digital tests.
