Purees

How do I get this child to like purees?
We are on week 3 of purees and so far she has only liked them 2 or 3 times. And it does not matter the flavor since one day she will like the flavor and the next time we give her that one she won't take it. She is even worse with the feedings when H tries to give her any solids. Daycare has been given her oatmeal (1 tablespoon of oatmeal 1/2 oz of formula) 1-2 times a day and that goes well. I even have the same spoons that daycare has. We did have daycare start her on oatmeal about 3 days sooner than we started her on purees, but she pretty much starting taking the oatmeal after a day or two.
I should add I have only tried Gerber purees, but I am pretty sure that Giant Eagle has Beachnut 4 oz containers, too. Do you think if I switched brands that would make any difference?

Is it a tongue thrust reflex or does she not seem to like purees?
G hated purees. Just never liked them. We were sort of forced into baby led weaning with her because she wouldn't eat purees.

It seems like she just doesn't like the purees. She doesn't push them out like she would if she had tongue thrust reflex. She even tries to chew the food. She sometimes gives me a face like I gave lemons. She will open her mouth the first couple times I try to give her the spoon and then she will turn her head after the 1-2 times. She has a feeding shortly after H brings her home from daycare and another around 9:15pm so we have the feeding a couple hours after 4:15/4:30pm. I have a feeling we might have to go the baby led weaning route. She will pick up the binky or anything we will let her to pick up and try to chew on it. We can afford it, but it sucks since we can get jars of purees through wic. jenn314 - Sorry about that. I think my 5 hours of sleep is getting to me.

snippet17 I've heard of people incorporating purees into BLW. Like spreading them on toast or freezing them to be eaten like popsicles. Maybe you can try that?

They also have these mesh things that look like pacifiers kind of, and you can put something frozen into them. You could freeze the purees and try that. Also, snippet17 - can you get fruits and veggies through WIC? Anything soft is good. Blueberries (cut in half or quarters), strawberries (cut into long, thin strips or diced small), boiled carrots cut into long, thin strips. Also, well-shredded chicken if you're looking for protein.

This is what happened with us, too. S refused any and all purées. We had planned on doing a combo- some purées and some BLW, but she had other plans. It's scary at first (and it'll be interesting to see if they'll do it at daycare), but honestly, it was the best fit for our family. S is super adventurous with what she eats now. Her pincer grasp is amazing for her age, and she's even trying to use a spoon herself now. It's not successful yet, but she's trying. I like that it simplifies mealtimes in terms of cooking. It is super messy, though. I had to wash her Halloween costume, the printer, and hose off the high chair after breakfast due to Greek yogurt, strawberries and egg bits being flung. I guess she was done eating.

I will add that the book Baby-Led Weaning by Gill Rapley and Tracey Murkett was really valuable in terms of where to start and where to go from there.

Can you try mixing fruit into the oatmeal? That's how we opened up S's tastebuds. We started with oatmeal also, and purees went either way for a while. Like, he LOVED carrots at first and then HAAAAAAAAAATED them. Anyway, we started adding a couple spoonfuls into a bowl of the rice cereal and added more and more as we went along. Now that we are moving away from purees, it's actually more difficult to get him to eat them. Fruits he still does okay with, but the more solid food we give him the more he hates the "dinner" type purees. So, regardless of what you choose to do, she won't starve

I will add that the book Baby-Led Weaning by Gill Rapley and Tracey Murkett was really valuable in terms of where to start and where to go from there. Yep I got this before starting too. Helped me explain the concept to my H and our parents as well. We've loved BLW. Gianna isn't a champion eater, but she eats plenty and tries pretty much everything we give her. One of the best parts is that it's been easy just giving her what we're eating and not having to buy or prepare something different for her. Plus it's encouraged us to start eating healthier too!
It does drive me nuts when she isn't hungry and throws her food on the ground. But I imagine flinging purees out of my hand would have driven me even more nuts and we would have gotten to solids eventually anyways!

kristenkay I love that idea. daub23 - My state is pretty liberal when it comes to wic (like they didn't want my income change info when I gave it to them) but they dont give the opinion for solid foods. But I can always buy it or add my own. I already buy bananas weekly for myself and other fresh fruits and veggies. Other than things like puffs I think we can only bring in purees to daycare. When she is 1 we can bring in our own food or have them make the food (for free) which we will go with.

I do need to figure out how to get her to stop trying to eat hair but I hope that just comes with time. I think the floor is clean she finds it while army crawling or tries to pull it out of my hair. Ouch

Found out we had some miscommunication with daycare. They thought we wanted them to give T a tablespoon in the morning and possibly in the afternoon even if she fussed and pretty much said no. Its been much better feeding her now that they only give her it until she fusses (which is what I do at home) and we got them some flavored oatmeal. They have carrots, green beans, and peas purees, too, which they can give her with no additional cost to us since they are in the state system so we told them they can do that. At 8 months the state system has it so the infants can be given eggs, yogurt, seafood, etc. But they are going to hold off since H explained to them about both of us having allergies and they are not allowed to introduce foods new to her in the infant room.
