Has anyone traveled by car 8 or more hours with young kids? We are going to NH for Thanksgiving and it will be the first time we are traveling out of state as a family of 4. We did it once when D was a baby, and when I was newly pregnant with C, but I don't know how to entertain a 4 and 2 year old. Any suggestions, ideas, would be appreciated. I'll be running out shortly, so I might not respond right away. Thanks in advance.

My parents would drive to FL from MA - a 24 hour drive. They would leave at our bedtime and give us dramamine before we left so we'd sleep soundly; they'd drive through the night, taking turns. Can you make a bulk of the drive while they're sleeping? Maybe leave very early in the morning (like 4am? or 2-3 hours before the kiddos wake up) get there for noon, and have a nap when you get there? Or leave late at night?
We had plenty of books, dolls, a little TV/VCR (whatever was available in '93). Frequent potty breaks.

(Only 3 hours though) He also took forever to get to sleep. We are planning to leave in the afternoon, which would be around nap time. Thanks! Definitely loading up my iPad and finding s DVD player.

Do you want one of my "happy" pills? Jk maybe
Car games. I have some felt game book for the car when T is older.
I was going to second trying to travel when they sleep. My cousin used to do that when he lived 4 hours away from my home town.

Paging CheesePlease , who I think travels regularly with Bean. We've done 2 plane trips and 2 semi-long distance road trips (6+ hours) with Bean and while far from perfect, she did pretty good on all of them. We're doing a 3.5 hour direct flight with her later this month and I'm not gonna lie - I'm terrified. She's 19 months now and faaaarrrrrr more active then the last plane trip so just hoping and praying it's not a shit show. But I digress! I've had the most success by giving her new toys &/or activities she's not had before...it buys at least a couple of hours. Frequent stops to let her run (rest stops with playgrounds were a godsend). Take turns sitting it back with the kids to play with them (just having a parent in the back seems like fun I think). Sing alongs. Hopefully a nap?? This last trip we left at bed time, hoping she's sleep, but she was so excited that she didn't actually fall asleep until 3 hours later (after nearly an hour of full out fit from being exhausted)...but then she slept pretty hard so I guess it kinda worked?? Anyway, good luck! Just plan on tacking a few extra hours onto the drive so you can break a lot and I'm sure it'll go smashingly well!

CheesePlease, I'd love to sit in the back with them, but I get car sick easily and it's very cramped with their seats. It's a good idea though, and maybe my H would be willing to do it while I drove. We ended up doing that with D when he was a baby.
