Hey everyone. Wow, what a whirlwind of a week it has been. Now that I finally got a break I figured I'd share my birth story. Sorry its a long one! It's so true when they say you can never plan a perfect delivery (and for those of you you did, I am jealous). I'm glad I "went with the flow," but I also wish I was not so naive with how this all would ultimately go down.
So due date was Monday (11/7), I saw my doctor at 10AM. At that time I had no contractions, but Sunday my back was hurting more than usual and I was getting a sharp cramp in my left thigh/pelvic area throughout the day. When I was checked at the appointment I was barely 2 cm and 80% effaced. She suggested the membrane sweep so we said OK. We then had an induction scheduled for Thursday morning. We left and went to get breakfast. While eating I felt some serious contractions that were about every 10 min or so. I called my doctor, she said to walk it off and relax for the rest of the day. So H and I walked around the mall to be close just in case and after an hour I felt fine so we went ahead and headed home (about 20 min from hospital). I was on and off crampy for the rest of the afternoon but by dinner time I was feeling totally fine so did not expect anything exciting. I took a nice long shower around 9:30 and was in bed before 11pm. 11pm comes along and I started getting severe contractions again. Still not sure if it was false and what not, I tried to ignore them but they kept coming and seemed closer together. I drank some water, tried laying different ways, nothing so I started timing around midnight. They were about 8-10 min apart. This continued throughout the night and by 2am they were 4-5 minutes a part and lasting 45 seconds to 1 min. So I woke up H and called the hospital, they said to come on in.
Trip #1: By the time we got situated, out the door, and to the hospital it was almost 3AM. I was pre registered, but we had to enter through the emergency room area since after hours and the girl at the desk was new and not listening, trying to get all this info that she did not need. Luckily another lady came along and checked me in and sent me to labor and delivery. Of course they were packed, so I was brought into a side room to be monitored. The girl checked me and said I was 90% and almost 4cm, but she was not getting contractions regularly on the monitor (which she just did not have the device correctly monitoring them :/) so we were told to walk around the area for 30 minutes. At one point a contraction hurt so bad it practically dropped me to my needs. So they rushed me back, and this time at least corrected the monitor so they were seeing the contractions still 4-5 min apart, but when they checked again, they said I was not even 2 cm dilated! So they sent me home and told me to come back when my water broke SO we obliged. We went home and I tried taking a shower but it hurt so bad that I broke down crying in the shower so H called his mom to ask for a heating pad but when she came over with it she immediately agreed I needed to go back...
Trip #2: so back we go, the contractions were timed at 3-5 minutes. We go back and they take me in, check me again...still not 2 cm but 90% effaced. They at least give me some pain meds (it does nothing) and let me stay for a bit. Pain is unbearable, the contractions are getting worse but I was not dilating. They send me home again, told me to take a bath and labor at home until my water breaks. We went to my SIL/BIL house since they live 5 minutes from the hospital, not 25. SIL makes me a bath and it felt good for about 15 minutes, but then the pain just came piercing back worse than before. I tried to eat something and rest but the pain was just getting worse and worse. Timing contractions at 3-5 min apart but some were lasting 3 minutes by itself. So back we go...
Trip #3, they could tell the pain I was in was enough to just take me in; They still would not admit me until I was 4cm,but at least prepped a room and the nurse I had that time was much more helpful in moving things along. She finally felt bad for me and they knew how much pain meds they had given, yet nothing was working. Within the hour or so she got me to a 4 (or fibbed because she felt bad). My mom and dad finally arrived right before (they live 2 hours away) they moved me into my room. I immediately broke down when I saw my mom and knew I would need her to get through this. My poor husband was beside himself because I was in so much pain and felt no one was doing anything to help me. He felt powerless so he had a hard time, so my mom being there gave him some relief too. I still had to wait for the epidural, so the pain was just worse and worse, I literally thought I was never going to make it through this. I tried the whirlpool while waiting for the epidural, but was still in so much pain. I was having prodromal back labor and no amount of medication would help. I don't even know what time I finally was able to get the epidural, but I do know there was a point they were not even sure if I could anymore. Thank god I got the go ahead, so once that was in I had pretty instant relief and got to rest a few hours. My water broke but I didnt even feel it. So they let things progress naturally and by 2:30 am I was at a 10 and ready to push. I decided to let my mom stay along with my husband. We started pushing at 3, and at first things were fine. But 2 hours and we are still pushing...Then 3 hours we get to a point where he was right there but would not crown and would turtle back in. In minutes it a hit a point where the pain immediately came back, i thought my back was breaking, terror all over again. So my doctor says we need to do a c-section. I was upset and scared but at that point I just wanted him out and I wanted to be out of misery. My husband was freaked about surgery so we asked my mom to stay with me which ultimately was best to keep me and my husband calm. I had to get a spinal tap, but i quickly could not feel anything again so just closed my eyes and concentrated on breathing. The best sound in the world was hearing that little boy cry. My mom got to the cut the cord and I could not do skin to skin right away but within a few minutes they did bring him to me so I could at least see him and nothing else mattered.
Jacob Michael was finally born at 7:29 am on 11/9/16, weighing 6 lbs 13 oz and was 18 inches long. We finally were able to come home yesterday, so now I am just adjusting. Jacob has been such a good baby and sleeps at least 2 if not 3 hours at a time, which at 5 days old seems pretty good to me. He self soothes a lot too and is just overall a happy baby for the most part (although he hates getting his diaper changed!)
So yeah, my perfect delivery of a little whirlpool and aroma therapy to relax followed by an epidural for a no pain delivery definitely did not happen, but luckily the cure is baby snuggles and all is good in the world again.
Cliff Notes:
labor started 11pm 11/7/16
prodromal back labor for about 20+ hours until I was finally admitted after 3 trips to L&D
epidural around 8pm
started pushing 3am
C-Section required after 3.5 hours pushing
