I have a (Catholic) friend named Mary Margaret. Her mother is Margaret Mary. She is one of like 7 siblings and they all have double first names that are a combination of Mary, Margaret, and Katherine for the girls and I think John, Christopher, and Michael for the boys. I have NO idea how they got everyone straight in that household.

I am giving my kid the middle name Lee and I am not 100% a fan of it since its such a popular middle name. My last name would not work as a middle name and I not a fan of my first name and loathe the nn. H and I decided before we got married that we would not be hyphening the baby's last name and we want the child to have part of my name so that is what we came up with. I just hope the kid has more tack compared to me and is not rude to the teachers when one calls me Mrs. H's last name. I was always mad when teachers assumed I had the same last name as my mom.

During my internship another intern was named Maggie, but she wanted to change her nn since she didn't feel like Maggie was for someone who was working. I guess she gave up on the idea of being named something else since she is listed as Maggie on Linkedin and fb.

Yes that's thrown me before too, with people who I thought were named Megan. Noooope. Errybody is Margaret. Although ironically enough for a name with SO MANY NICKNAMES, my niece is named Margaret and her parents REFUSE to call her anything but her full name. Her mom shot laser beams at the first person who said "oh cute, will you call her Maggie?" At least they're following the "if you're not going to call your kid that, why name her that" rule? My cousin at least just used Molly, since that's what they're calling her, and not Margaret. My sister is named Veronica, after our grandmother who went by Vera. My dad's sisters got it in their head that she could be Ronnie, and my mom shut that down real quick. Good call. I am not a fan of Ronnie

I've always liked Maggie, but H doesn't like Margaret, and shut down Maggie because "it's a dog's name" (what?) I do have an aunt who has a dog called Maggie, but I would not say only dogs can be called Maggie.

We have a cat named Amelia, but it's definitely a human name, as it happens she was named for Amelia Earhart because she leaped off EVERYTHING as a kitten like she wanted to fly. I like Maggie as a nn for Margaret, and while I get naming what you want to call them if I was named Maggie I'd prefer to be able to put Margaret on my resume, KWIM?

Oh also, I just looked up Polly. Apparently a nn for Mary?? From wikipedia: "Polly is a nickname for Mary, and is derived from another nickname for Mary, Molly. It is sometimes used as a name in its own right." So Molly is also a nn for Mary...which makes no sense. All these silly Catholics have to come up with crazy nicknames for people because they can't come up with enough original names to go around! (I'm Catholic btw). WTF. Mary is so short, why would it need a nickname. I am surprised that the only Mary I am kinda related to is my ex-step aunt.

Maybe it's from the days when Mary was a SUPER common name, to differentiate between all the Marys. Also, I totally understand the random pet name association problem. It still weirds me out to find a human named Leo, Sophie, Sandy, or Darren. All normal names but they happened to belong to cats or dogs I grew up with (we had lots of pets).
