Lurker, old-GISer and marathoner here... What they may not realize is that, by the end of a marathon, sometimes you can't physically stop. You're not thinking clearly and all that matters is crossing the finish.
I've got marathon #13 next Sunday and #14 on 11/1. If someone stood between me and the finish, my instinct would be to push them out of my way, not to stop and think about their cause. If they want to make an impression on the runners and encourage them to do some critical thinking, they should do it at the BEGINNING of the race. Or mid-race. Or all along the course. Then they'd have 12,000 people critically thinking for 26.2 miles or four hours (on average). That would be a better strategy, not messing with people's finish times and getting them mad at your cause.
Last year I saw 10 human bananas along the course of the NYC marathon. Every few miles there was a banana. After a while I started looking for the bananas. And 11 months later I still remember the bananas. Take a hint from the impressionable bananas and don't block the finish!
